Spoiler:

Suimen Hokou no Gyou [Art of Water Walking]
Rank: C (Basic)
Requirements: None
Description: The user focuses their chakra to the soles of their feet and step onto the water. From the surface of the liquid, they would then need to be able to measure the amount of chakra it would take to support their weight along the surface of the water without sinking. Once this is mastered, the user would be able to easily walk on water.

ooc: training post 1-9

ic: Kodo jumped back as the fog parted and he’d seen a large dragon come from the water's surface. He had been frightened by the large beast made of water. Not wanting to see any more he closed his eyes, scrambled to his feet, and then ran down the coast line. After about five minutes of running Kodo found himself several miles from the battle. The fog had once again thickened and Kodo couldn’t see more then a foot in front of his face. He turned around several times disoriented. Every side looked the same. Kodo heard a sound coming from behind him and he pulled out his sword and held it up. As the sound got louder Kodo started to back up. As he did he heard the familiar sound of splashing water, his feet also felt wet. Kodo was backing out into the water. The water was now up to his knees if he went out any farther the tide could carry him out to sea and he would never be heard from again. The Suimen Hokou no Gyou [Art of Water Walking] Jutsu was his only chance he had to learn it and learn it fast. The tide was coming in and the waves pushed and pulled at his body.

Kodo placed his hands in the Tori hand seal. He doesn’t know why. It just always felt natural to him. Where every other ninja in the academy held the Hitsuji hand seal to focus chakra he always used Tori. He was laughed at for it and got bad marks, but still he was able to charge and focus his chakra just the same if not better then the other students. This is what he was doing, Charging and focusing his chakra.

From what he knows about the Suimen Hokou no Gyou it was very similar to the Kinobori jutsu in which the ninja uses their chakra to walk on a surface that would otherwise be impossible. Because water is of a different mater and isn’t solid, but rather a liquid, the chakra amount would be different. He had to first get out of the water. He couldn’t very well walk on top of it if he was beneath it now could he. So Kodo focused his chakra into his feet just like in the Kinobori training. With the water still only at his knees Kodo didn’t have to lift his foot very high to keep it above the water. Kodo tried to shift his weight to his raised foot, but left his other leg without any support. And when a wave came crashing into him it knocked him off balance and he fell into the water.

“Garble…” Kodo’s impulsiveness had just cost him several feet as the wave crashed over his unbalanced form pulling him farther out to sea. Kodo tumbled several times under water before he was able to use his chakra to secure his feet to the bottom. This was only effective for a second as the shifting waters moved the fractured sand from under his feet. Kodo stood up long enough to see that the water had risen to his waist. Then another wave crashed into his back and pushed him closer to shore. “Man focusing chakra on sand is as difficult as water.”

Kodo looked out into the mist covered water and saw another wave coming in for the attack. He focused his chakra into his feet once more and waited. Kodo was so focused on the wave in front of him he didn’t see the one returning from shore. When it hit him from behind Kodo lost focus on the shifting sand beneath him and his feet slipped out from under him. He tried to regain his balance but it was too late. The incoming wave hit Kodo hard and swallowed him up. His body shifted and twisted within the wave as it crashed onto shore.

As the water from the wave reseeded Kodo’s body can be found laying face down in the sand. “Cough, cough” Kodo lifted his body of the sand with his hands. He could feel his lungs filled with water as he coughed it up time after time. He had entered the belly of the beast and it didn’t like his taste. Kodo laid face up on the beach, wheezing from the water still in his lungs. His pulse was racing from what he’d just experienced. He could have drowned. His entire life flashed before his eyes; at least he thinks it was his. He can’t remember anything before his coma and yet there were flashes of him as a younger child.

Kodo looked to the raging water and covered his face with his arm as another wave crashed over him. Kodo then got to his feet and took in a big breath of air. Then he coughed up more water. He was drowning, he wasn’t under water, but still he couldn’t breath. Kodo dropped to his knees and supported his weight with his hands as he bent over and coughed up even more water. “How much did I swallow?” Kodo asked himself as he coughed up another spurt of water.

Kodo heard the flapping of wings and Airazor dropped a large fish at his feet. Kodo picked up the fish then threw it away. He couldn’t eat anything. Partly because he still had a stomach full of shark, and second because he didn’t want to eat anything until he could walk on the raging sea before him. Kodo took slow shallow breaths until the ingoing oxygen could out balance the hydrogen in his lungs and cause the water to break down. With the water out of his lungs and dispersed throughout his bloodstream Kodo could breath normally and continue his task of learning Suimen Hokou no Gyou.

Kodo walked back to the shoreline holding the Tori hand seal. His chakra flowed freely through his body as he got ever closer to the waters edge. As Kodo placed his first foot into the water his chakra rushed to that location. He then took another step and his chakra split between both feet. A Wave came whipping into shore and Kodo was knocked back a foot. His chakra was holding strong on the shifting sand beneath the waves. “This is good. If I can hold myself sturdy against the ever shifting sand wile the waves continue to batter me I’ll be one step closer to learning Suimen Hokou no Gyou.”

Several waves have collided with Kodo either pushing him further out to sea or closer to shore. He was slowly but surly getting the hand of balancing on the sand under him. As time passed the incoming and outgoing wave were moving him less and less. He felt he was now ready to further progress in his training.

Kodo looked down the shoreline unable to see very far because of the thick mist. He wanted to know how well Tamotsu-sensei was doing against the Kiri-ninja. Was the fight over by now or was it just starting? He didn’t know. Perhaps Tamotsu-sensei had won. What if he didn’t? What if Katsuga Uchiha had killed Tamotsu-sensei and was now stalking him to ensure there would be no witnesses. “No!” Kodo couldn’t think like that. He had to maintain focus on the task at hand. He had to learn how to walk on water. That is the only way he could be of any help to his sensei.

Now was the task of getting on top of the water. Kodo waited for the first set of waves to pass. He would only have a few short moments before the next set of waves came inland. He lifted his dominant foot up to knee level and layered it with chakra. He then lowered it on top of the water. Kodo could feel that it was staying so he sifted his weight and watched as he fell into the water. He was getting close he could feel it. First it was walking up a tree with a solid base, then stabilizing on the shifting sand a not so solid base, now he had to stand on water with a liquid base. After that he would learn to walk. One must learn to stand before they can walk.

Kodo tried and tried again to hold his foot above the water. Each time he was able to hold it there longer and longer. He still couldn’t shift his weight to the leg and lift himself out and stand. What could he be doing wrong? Perhaps if he disbursed his chakra further around his foot rather then just below it he could do the same with his weight and tat would allow him to stand on the water. It is very similar to how snowshoes disburse your weight out and keep you on top of a soft pile.

Kodo tried that. He focused his chakra into the soul of his foot and just before placing it on the water’s top layer he expanded it over a wider area. The result was having the water move from beneath his foot and his foot dropping into the water. “Well that was a waste of chakra. If I place too much chakra my foot will become heavy and fall in. If I disburse it too much then the water moves away and I have nothing to support my weight on.” Kodo pondered on this thought awhile as he waited for the incoming set of waves to make their pass.

“This is a basic Jutsu to use but a difficult one to learn. It isn’t the amount of chakra you use, but rather how it flows. It must flow in harmony with the water. With the solid tree thee was little movement to the structural integrity of the tree. Thus there was no need for a large change in chakra flow. Just enough to stick and unstitch from the tree as you walked.” … “With the sand you have multiple solid bases rather then just one. Thus needing to change where on your foot to channel your chakra to maintain stability.” … “With water there is no solid base to focus my chakra. And I don’t need one.” Kodo came to a strong realization.

“I have been trying to focus my chakra as if to a solid base. Instead I should be trying to make my feet buoyant and float on top of the water. Now how do I do that?” Kodo was so lost in thought he didn’t notice that several sets of waves had passed by him and he wasn’t focusing his chakra. When Kodo came back to reality the water level had already creped halfway up his chest. He was several hundred feet from shore and the waves were getting rougher. It was "do or drown" time for Kodo. If he couldn’t get himself out of the water he was finished.

Kodo dropped below the waves and focused his chakra. He was going to rise like the phoenix from this watery grave. His body started to naturally float to the surface. Kodo just used his Chakra to speed up the process. He shot out of the water like a dolphin as the water parted and surged around him. Kodo fell back into the water, only this time he didn’t sink that fast. “Good.” He thought to himself. “My chakra is slowing my drop. Now just a bit more, and…”

Kodo’s body stopped sinking, and then it started to again. He wouldn’t let this deter him from his goal. He changed the flow of his chakra and he started sinking faster. He reversed the flow and he stopped. This time he didn’t move he just listened to the sound of the water and let his chakra do the rest. He then took a step up and his foot held on the surface of the water. This was then followed by his other foot that also remained on top of the water. “Well… Step one: standing on the water. Now for step two: walking.”

Kodo was standing on the water’s surface… well almost on. His feet were below the surface, and his balance was wavy. Should a big enough wave com by, Kodo would be knocked completely off balance and fall into the rushing water. He had the basics of standing on water, now he just had to move. Kodo lifted his foot off the surface to take a step and a wave hit the back of his knee sending him off balance. His knee buckled under the pressure and Kodo fell completely into the water with a large splash

Now beneath the powerful rushing waves, Kodo fights the current and shifting tide to swim to the surface. Once he breached the surface Kodo gasped for a big breath of air. What he got was a mouthful of sea water. Kodo spit out the salty liquid through his mask and struggled to stay afloat, his arms and legs thrashing about with no rhythm. Kodo tried to focus on his chakra flow and not the fact that he could drown out here. This was not an easy task as Kodo’s fear of water started to become stronger. Panic would soon set in if he didn’t get this jutsu right soon.

Kodo closed his eyes and tried to think of something pleasant other then his, soaked to the bone, body. What he got was an image of himself flying on the wind. Only he wasn’t transformed into Airazor. It was actually him flying. When Kodo opened his eyes he was standing on the surface of the water. Kodo could feel the water move under his feet and also how his chakra flowed with the water keeping the balance. “This is different then the tree-” Kodo took a step forward, “- The tree is solid and this you need to barely change how much chakra you use to-” Kodo took another step, getting ever closer to the shore line. “- release your foot and take another step.” Kodo walked several more feet. “With water having no solid surface to stick to, there is no need for such a fluctuation. Just let the water guide the flow of your chakra and let them move in harmony. This jutsu is easier to use then Kinobori.”

Kodo jumped for joy as he felt that he finally succeeded in learning this jutsu. His excitement got the better of him as he jumped backwards into a backhand spring. With his feet sticking up in the air Kodo’s hands were the first to hit the water. Well Kodo didn’t have his chakra focused in his hands and he sank. Luckily he had made it most of the way back to shore and he was only in about three feet of water. Kodo’s legs fell and he floated to the surface on his back. “That was a foolish mistake. One I have to rectify before I can really say I learned this jutsu.”

Kodo gets to his feet then stepped onto the waters surface. As he expected he remained on the surface. “Being able to walk on the water just isn’t good enough. I need to be able to completely maneuver on the water’s surface. Other wise I’m still going to be useless to Tamotsu-sensei.” Kodo knelt down and placed his hand on the surface of the water. He looked up to see a set of waves making their way to the shore. He wasn’t using very much chakra to keep his feet on top of the water, so he should still have plenty to focus to his hand.

Kodo took his hand out of the water and stood to wait for the waves to pass by. To his surprise they barely touched him. His weight shifted slightly but the waves had little effect on his location. Once they had passed and returned to the sea, Kodo estimated that he would have about three minutes before the next set. He bent back down and held the Tori hand seal. He had to keep the focus of his chakra into both his legs and still focus some into his hands. A Task he found to be very difficult.

Kodo could focus his chakra to any part of his body at will. Chakra control was one of his strong points. It was multitasking that was difficult. He was having trouble focusing on more then one thing at a time. This included disbursing his chakra. He had to focus his chakra into his feet as well as any other part of his body that may touch the water. In this case his hands. Kodo held the Tori hand seal and felt some of his chakra focus into his hands. He placed one of his hands onto the surface of the water. He shifted his weight to it slightly. When the hand started to sink Kodo shifted his weight back to his feet. He tried it again and his hand held on the surface for a moment before sinking. The control was coming to him. Kodo tried once more and his hand remained on the surface. He placed more weight on it, but still it did not sink. Confident that he go the flow right, Kodo placed his other hand on the surface of the water. It too stayed in place.

Kodo shifted his weight evenly to all four of his limbs. Just as he did this the next set of waves came rushing into view. Kodo’s chakra exploded as he jumped to avoid the incoming waves. His jump came up short as he landed on top of the first wave. The wave’s instability at its crest caused Kodo to sink partly into it. He rode the wave for a second before jumping onto the next one. As with the first he sank partway into the wave. Kodo rode the second wave all the way to shore.

The waves retreated back into the sea the shore line once again became still. Kodo had one final step before he could call this jutsu learned. He had to be able to fight on the water. He had to be able to use his other jutsu wile staying on the waters surface. Kodo held the Tori hand seal as he ran out onto the water. He ran out about ten feet or so. The waters depth was only about three feet here, so if Kodo faltered most of his body could still be well above water.

He would first try the Bunshin no Jutsu. Kodo held the Hitsuji hand seal and two clones appeared. “Good I didn’t sink. Now for a more advanced Jutsu.” The Henge no Jutsu was Kodo’s next attempt. He selected Tamotsu as his transformation. Chakra wrapped around his form and a poof of smoke went off. There was Tamotsu-sensei standing on the waters surface. “Good I still didn’t sink.” Kodo canceled his transformation and dispelled the two clones.

With the kid stuff out of the way Kodo was about to try the Lotus, a Combat Jutsu. If he could use this without falling into the water he will have truly learned Suimen Hokou no Gyou. The difficulty of using Lotus wile being on the surface is that it uses a different flow of chakra. He would have to quickly switch between the constant flow of the water to the solid force of the Lotus. At the same time he needs to use both at once, a task that would prove most difficult.

Kodo started by running over the surface of the water. His speed was slower then on land. But still fast enough to strike without warning. “Lotus!” Kodo’s chakra flooded his body. It focused into his eyes and lungs just as before. Kodo could feel his feet losing grip on the waters surface. If he slowed down to strike he would surly sink. He had to keep the chakra needed in his feet to stay on the water. As he ran in circles he could slowly feel his grip returning. He was getting tired as the strain from using the Lotus was taking its toll. He ran back to shore and steadied his chakra flow. “Fine Jutsu learned. I will just have to practice it more to master it.” Kodo dropped to a knee and panted hard to catch his breath. Once that too regulated he walked down the shoreline to Tamotsu-sen’s battle with Katsuga Uchiha. Maybe the fight was over and Tamotsu-sensei had won. Kodo could only hope for the best.

(Jutsu learned…  I will post in Kat’s training topic after he and AJ post more.)
