Tetsu held the piece of paper in his left hand, rolled up gently enough that it would not crease. My first mission, he thought to himself, passing other travelers of the path. A man tipped his hat, looking in Tetsu’s direction, smiling. Tetsu responded with a calm nod, returning a grin as he walked on. I don’t care what I have to do to take care of this mission, I will finish this. This will take me one step closer to reaching you. His right hand tightened into a fist as his stare turned into one of contempt. He quickly corralled his emotions, looking up at the sun-bathed clouds. Morning had just begun, and so had his journey.

He finally came to the house he was looking for. It was a roughed-up shack that stood on a wooden foundation that doubled as a porch on all sides. It was an odd way to live in Tetsu’s eyes, and he wondered whether the man who lived here had built it himself or bought it from another. From the looks of the aging pile of damp wood next to the front door and the thousands of letters in a small faded red box that had the word “mail” on it, the man may not have been at home. Nonetheless, Tetsu walked up to the door and knocked as hard as he could without breaking the old board.

“I’m coming!” Tetsu heard a voice echo from the window. He cautiously stepped towards it, peering through the dusty glass. He could see the figure of an old man stepping through a room filled with glass figures. The man turned away suddenly, looking at a cabinet, and Testu could hear him ask himself aloud, “Now, what was I just about to do? Maybe eat..” Great, Tetsu groaned, I got stuck with an old codger who can’t remember to breathe. Tetsu knocked against the window, and the old man jumped, turning to see a young face leering at him. He the gasped, and went to the door.

“Ah! Come in! You’re here for the meter, right?” Tetsu quickly stepped in, glancing around the inside of the stranger’s home. Glass was everywhere; shards, figures, carvings, and the like were all cluttered on the floors and cabinets. Tetsu looked down to find that there were crystallized remains of glass shards at his feet, and suddenly he was glad that he had worn socks with his sandals. A hand tapped him on the shoulder.

“No, what meter? Ai, nevermind,” Tetsu was upset at the amount of shock and uncertainty he was displaying in his voice. He shook his head, and then focused upon the old man’s face. Wrinkles aside, his eyes were a clear blue, displaying his youthful attitude. His hair remained a light gray and was disheveled. “You must be Don. I am here to paint your house for you.”

“Ah! Alright! You can start now!” Don smiled at the young ninja in front of him, who tapped his foot on the ground in an irritated fashion. He then realized that he had forgotten something. “Ah! That’s right! You need paint brushes and paint, don’t you? Well, that stuff is in the back. Follow me.” Don darted expertly through the debris of his work, giving Tetsu a bit of a startle that he could move so quickly to be such an old man. When they got outside, Tetsu let out a loud gasp.

The entire back yard of Don’s little shack was covered by various glass statues. They had depicted mythical beasts, famous shinobi, and even major places in the village. Don grinned as Tetsu stared at his creations, and then turned to the boy. “Ah! Wait a minute, you didn’t forget that you have a job to do, didja?”

Tetsu was a bit taken back by Don’s comment, so he quickly stumbled over to the paint cans, opening them with a kunai which he them tucked back into his sleeve. After pulling the lids off completely, he looked at the odd mix of colors. He decided not to question Don’s choice of light, faded greens and blues and pinks, and upon picking up a paintbrush, Tetsu set to work.

As he began, starting off with a light blue that was hardly visible in the sun’s approaching light, he spoke to Don, who was absently admiring his collection. “So why did your memory suddenly take a change for the better?” Tetsu turned to look at Don who had began chuckling to himself.

“You know, little ninja, I was once a famous glass worker.” Don walked up to a statue, caressing its edges as he spoke. “I would create beautiful pieces of work for many customers way back then. But one day, I realized that I began to forget things. At first, they were little events; forgetting a snack, leaving my hats at stores, you know, small things. However, it soon became worse, and I began to forget orders, and people stopped coming. Now I find that the only way I can keep anything on my mind is to sculpt it from the glass I collect from the streets and what people have tossed out over the years. They’re my memory now.”

Tetsu continued to paint the little shack as Don stared at his memories.

Within a few hours, a few changes of paint color, and a small break to eat (which Tetsu had to remind Don about), he had finished painting his house. Tetsu looked it over. The house was covered in various shades of light colors, slipping into one another’s space, coexisting together, seemingly just as faded as the house was once before. Don looked it over beside him, smiling. He looked up at the old man, questioning him, “Why are you so happy? It looks no better than when I came here, aside from the fact that now it is more than one color.”

“Ah, but you forgot a can.” Don pointed to a can of paint that was hanging from the hand of a glass woman. Tetsu walked over to it, slipping out a kunai once again to pop the lid. However, when he looked into it to see its contents, it appeared to have some sort of transparent liquid. “Water? You want me to remove the color?”

Don chuckled, shaking his head. “No, no, it’s a type of finisher that I use for my glass. Put it on the house and you’ll see. Here, I’ll help you.” Don grabbed a paintbrush, quickly setting to work. Tetsu was curious as to what would happen next, but he did not question Don’s idea. A mission is a mission, he thought, but I want to know… what is he up to? Tetsu brought the paintbrush to the mouth of the can, dipping it in slowly. As he pulled the brush back out, he noticed that the brush looked lighter, shinier. Tetsu looked at the liquid in wonderment, moving slowly towards the shack’s newly-painted walls until he could practically see the paint chips. He brought the brush against a light green streak, moving it along the same direction as it had before, melding with a light yellow, and then a lavender. Tetsu felt the sun against his neck as he stared at what he had done.

Nothing? Nothing has changed? Tetsu looked at the wall in disappointment, expecting a miracle to occur. As he brought his brush back down to his side, however, the liquid caused the paint already on the wall to glow. Tetsu stared as the lavender sparkled in the rays of the sun, and when he stepped back, he could clearly trace where he had painted by looking at the dancing glimmers of the wall. He let out a small laugh, turning to Don to make sure he didn’t hear him. But Don was already on the other side of the wall with another paint can of the finisher, and about to hit the next side. I can’t let him do what I came here to, he frowned, turning to the wall with a sudden grin of determination.

One step closer. Tetsu quickly took a step closer to the wall, dragging the brush’s remains against the faded paint colors. One step faster. He quickly dipped the brush back into the paint can in his hand, then swiftly returning to his duty. One step stronger. The minutes passed once again, ten, twenty, thirty. His hand was beginning to ache, but he continued on, not stopping in between each dip and each stroke as he stepped slowly to the left each time. He could see Don moving in closer as well. The last wall, and so close to being done.

Finally, once they had met along the remaining wall and finished their work, Don and Tetsu took a step back to watch the sun bake the house with its light. The little shack now shone with an incredible radiance not unlike his glass art, and Don sighed contently, thinking aloud, “My memories… aren’t yet complete. I think it’s about time I started putting my work back on the market, don’t you?”

“Yes, and I know the perfect place to start.” Tetsu grinned, thinking of his grandmother as he watched the colors flow along the new memory that both he and Don had created. She would enjoy the fresh artwork in the store; it would help business. Don suddenly shouted, “Ah! Don’t forget your mission!”

Tetsu turned to Don, who had his paper in his hand. Don handed it to him, his signature neatly at the bottom. Tetsu waved goodbye to Don as he walked back into his house to begin his next piece of work. Tetsu then turned to run along the path, thinking aloud with a furrowed brow and a face displaying his pure perseverance, “And one step brighter; four of the millions of steps I’m taking to get to you, and each one is worth it.”
