Description: A useful technique that utilizes chakra to float projectile weapons in front of the shinobi. The user must first put some chakra into a weapon as they throw it, and they can then make it float in the air several inches in front of them. A large number of projectiles can be made to float like this, but it requires greater concentration with each additional weapon and also depends on their size. These projectiles can then be launched at a target all at once, which allows one to have more ranged attack options than if they were throwing the weapons.

“This” Ayumu Mameha grinned conspiratorially to her son “Will make their eyes water. Our chakra strings can control more than just puppets.”

To demonstrate, she clasped her hands together, letting her sleeves completely cover them for a moment. Then, with a flourish, her hands parted and no less than five kunai hovered before her, presumably held in place by a chakra string. Without warning, the five kunai rocketed away from her and stabbed into the target at the other end of the range in a perfectly precise pattern, each hitting the bullseye.

“Can you control the Kunai when it’s in flight?” he asked, fighting to keep the wonder from his voice.

“Yes, but not with this technique. This just allows you to launch more than one kunai at once, and at different trajectories, meaning-“

“Meaning that the opponent has less chance to get out of the way in time?” Tetsuya finished.

“Exactly. You need to imbue the kunai with some of your own chakra first, however, which can be a little tricky. Master that first, then just string them together with a chakra string. After that, child’s play.” She grinned, ruffling her son’s hair affectionately.

He sat in the kitchen with ten kunai arrayed before him. At the other end of the table was the bullseye target, pinned up on the wall by the door. Mameha had gone out to meet her husband for some lunch, leaving Tetsuya to work on the first part of learning the new technique: imbuing his kunai with chakra – no mean feat considering that the weapons weren’t designed to channel or conserve chakra.

The Genin figured it’d be easiest to start with what he knew. Chakra ran down to his hands, to his fingertips, and he brushed his left hand over the farthest left Kunai. The chakra bled out, but didn’t hold. Tets frowned and repeated the motion with identical results. Forcing chakra into his fingertips once more, the Genin rested his entire hand on the weapon and held it there for a good ten seconds, letting his chakra gradually transfer over to the surface of the Kunai.
Almost tentatively, he reached out with a chakra string.

The Kunai answered, and lifted up slightly into the air.

”Well, I guess that counts as a success...” Tets thought to himself grimly as he settled in for an afternoon of mental strain. Nobody had ever said becoming a shinobi would be easy.

Five more repetitions of the previous procedure insured that Tetsuya had the fundaments of transferring his chakra down, and he was pleasantly surprised by how quickly he picked it up. That was not to say that he could imbue the kunai with chakra that would last any length of time, as he felt it bleed out after just over a minute, but that was usually enough time.

At dinner, his mother asked him how he was progressing, which for once didn’t provoke that horrible tightening of his stomach, knowing that he was about to disappoint her.

“Actually, it’s going okay. I can transfer my chakra to the blades now, and I’m improving the time it takes to do so. I reckon a day or two more and I’ll have it.”

His parents were delighted to hear a newfound confidence in his voice and made sure to pour on the encouragement that evening as he showed them how he could transfer his chakra so simply. The next day would be the true test, however.

He lay in bed, restless. Tetsuya heard his parents go to bed hours ago, and still he couldn’t get to sleep – he was too energised, too eager to master the Soushuuha. Gritting his teeth, he stood up, pulled on his shorts and grabbed his kunai pouch.

The cool night air was a welcome wake-up call as he sat down on the rooftop and arrayed the five kunai in front of him. It was almost too easy now to imbue each of the five with chakra and then pick them up with his puppet string, the five weapons seemingly hovering before him. With another pulse, the kunai were shot across the rooftop and stabbed into the chimney wall.

“Okay, got the basics down, now I’m gonna try something a liiiiittle bit more tricky.” He muttered to himself, using his chakra strings to dislodge all five of the kunai and call them back to him. The process was repeated, the bladed imbued with chakra, brought up before him, tethered to a chakra string, only this time a second, less powerful string was attached to one of the Kunai. They fired off again, however Tetsuya maintained the second string’s connection. A twitch of his finger had a kunai alter its trajectory slightly and stab into the floor at the base of the chimney.

The Genin smirked.

The rest of the night consisted of Tetsuya firing Kunai from the chakra strings, working on his aim. Whilst he tried and tried to successfully alter the trajectory of one of the kunai once in flight by using another string, it proved too fast to aim – his mother had been right; there wasn’t a decent way to aim them with the strings once they were in motion. The sun was just peeking over the rim of the Cliffside surrounding Kuna when Tets was finally satisfied that he’d managed to improve the basic straight-line accuracy of the shot. He collapsed back into bed, exhausted and never heard his mother’s call to wake him up an hour later.

At midday, he awoke and swore to himself, scrabbling to get ready and into the shower. He didn’t even bother to dry his hair after emerging from the bathroom. The kunai pouch in hand, he jogged back up to the roof of the apartment. Waiting for him was Hiroshi, who was deftly throwing up a kunai and catching it in the same hand.

“Afternoon.” He grinned at Tetsuya, who shot him a dirty look from beneath a damp mop of dishevelled hair.

“Aren’t you supposed to be training on the body flicker?” Tetsuya replied irritably as he struggled to attach his kunai pouch to the back of his belt.

Hiroshi replied by performing the jutsu flawlessly, appearing behind his friend and tapping him on the shoulder.

“Grats” Tetsuya grunted, pulling out five kunai.and imbuing them with his chakra.

He then slotted them back into the pouch at the small of his back and settled into a ready stance, as if an invisible antagonist were squaring off in front of him.

Hiroshi watched with interest as his friend proceeded to focus chakra along his left index finger, flick it over his shoulder and yank all five of the powered kunai from the pouch and then catch them on another chakra thread before him. They paused for the barest moment before rocketing out and stabbing into the chimney.

“Not bad, not bad. A useful opener, however it’s pretty telegraphed – it’d only really work as a distraction, you’re taking too long to release them. It might be quicker to just draw and throw with your hands.” Hiroshi commented, sounding much older than his meagre fourteen years of age.

“Yeah, I need to practice to build up the speed. A lot.” Tetsuya agreed. Usually, if someone had criticised him so openly, the least they’d get in return was a sarcastic remark, however The ninjutsu specialist had earned Tetsuya’s respect in the past – he could look above pride with him.

“I’ll leave you to it then, good luck.”

The rest of the day was frustrating for Tets. He was unable to imbue the kunai, draw them all, catch them on a chakra string and fire them in under one second. It simply wasn’t possible when the kunai pouch was at the small of his back.

“Well, if the Kunai were imbued before battle began and I made a practice of doing so before I know I’m entering combat, that could cut down on the draw time I guess...” Tets mused to himself over dinner.

“Have you thought about moving the Kunai pouch?” His father offered in-between mouthfuls of Udon noodles.

“It impacts my movement and flexibility if I move it. Plus, I’ve always trained with it at the small of my back. It’d mean completely retraining muscle-memory. No, there’s a way of getting this down.” He replied, reflecting idly that it was amazing that he was able to converse with his parents ‘professionally’.

His mother smirked – an expression he’d definitely inherited. “You could always wear something that covers your arms and not show off so much, then you’d be able to draw the kunai from your sleeves.”

He speared her with a look, but there was no malice to it.

The rest of the evening was spent relaxing with his parents, joking around whilst performing the various after-dinner chores. The entire dynamic of the Amuyu household had changed recently, and Tetsuya was not at all sad to feel as if he were finally living up to his parents’ expectations and name.

The next morning Tetsuya sat cross-legged on his bed after having showered with all ten kunai arrayed before him. He concentrated and poured double the normal amount of chakra into them all, hoping it’d hold for longer before heading up to the roof. The morning sun was already hot, but the Genin ignored it – he had a plan. Chakra poured down his arms, speeding them up and focused to a point at his finger tips. His right hand formed the beginnings of a single chakra string, whilst his left had five shoot out – one from each digit. He brought his left arm up over his shoulder and attached a string to each of the kunai handles and yanked them out, then called the right string to his left hand and held the kunai vertically, as if they were attached to a bow string. They launched in a single line and Tets couldn’t contain a fist-pump of victory and a hissed “Yessssss.”

“Very nice, just under half a second. That’s combat worthy, for sure.” Hiroshi commented from behind him.

“Damn! I wish you hadn’t learned the Body Flicker.” Tets muttered in response, annoyed that his friend had gotten the jump on him.

“I was here delivering a message. Your dad wants you to meet him in his workshop.” Hiroshi ignored the scorn and patted his friend none-too-gently on the shoulder by way of congratulation, and together they proceeded back down into the apartment.

Ayumu Tetsumaru’s workshop was a display in organised mess if ever there was one. Every single surface was covered in puppet parts. Hanging from the rafters were a myriad of old puppets like some sort of morbid slaughter-house, but it smelled of freshly cut wood and tool oil.

“I found him, Ayumu-san.” Hiroshi greeted Tetsumaru, who grinned in return.

“Thanks, Hiroshi. Tetsuya, have you done it?” He asked, smiling broadly at the two Genin.

By way of answering, Tetsuya performed the Soushuuha, letting the kunai stab into a wrecked puppet in the corner of the room.

“Brilliant! Simply by rotating it ninety degrees you were able to reduce the drawing-time so effectively! You’ll make a fine ninja. I have a present for you.” He grinned, and stepped aside.
Lying on the workbench was a puppet Tetsuya had never seen before. It was about the size of a toddler, had four limbs, a shock of black hair identical to Tets’s and an open, almost eerie smile fixed on its wooden face.

“She’s called Aiko. A brilliant starting puppet, and small enough for you to carry on your back.” He sounded almost smug.

“She’s amazing, thanks Dad!” Tets hugged his father, unable to take his eyes off his first ever puppet. He was almost ready to start taking on assignments.
