Rules:Gaining a Pet

Ok, So I want to know, what is the rules on gaining a pet, and how to do it RP wise, I have a couple of characters, and none of my characters have one, so I was wondering if I could possibly Gain one in RP, but I am not exactly sure how, and what the rules of that is.

Does anyone know the rules on this, since most of the Ninja and Nin pets I have seen already seem to have one, I don't know what to do.
