After leaving Caleb's house behind, Ellen didn't really pay attention to where she was going, until she eventually found herself in the Forest of Death. Well, this is ironic. But I guess it makes sense, - she said to herself, thinking about everything that happened to her after running into the weird masked man. Everything began here, so it would only be fitting that it ended here as well. Idiot, why did you run away?Shut up, as if you could understand!Honestly, if I weren't just a voice in your head, I'd slap you for being such an emo bitch. Stop fucking pitying yourself for a damn moment and think about things calmly, idiot. Over the next several minutes, as she followed Nel's advice, Ellen hated herself more and more with each second. God, I am such an idiot! - she finally exclaimed and shook her head, - Well, there is nothing I can do about it now. Might as well make some use of the end results. As she said that, she headed towards a random tree and started practicing taijutsu on it, though it was more taking out her frustration than anything. Ha ha ha! Found you! - an unfamiliar voice, but one she had heard before, came from above. Standing on one of the lower branches was a man in a karategi and red tengu mask, - Or did you think that your little transformation tricks would throw off a genius like myself? How naive! You are...The one and only! The peerless! The invincible! The super! Mr. Karate! - he interrupted her, striking a victory pose. Ellen stared at the man with a blank expression, and although it couldn't be seen behind the mask, it ticked him off, which became apparent when he stomped, pointed at her and shouted: What the hell is with that expression?! You should be impressed! And trembling in my presence! Well, regardless, - he said, suddenly calming down, - You seem to have gotten stronger since the last time we met. That time, you weren't worth much, but this time, when I beat you, I will become the true heir of Kyokugenryuu. What? I don't...! Not letting her voice any objections, the man in the tengu mask attacked. He was fast and strong: despite the considerable distance between them, the girl barely had the time to dodge backwards, and his blow left a considerable hole in the ground when it hit. She was still in mid-air when a ball of energy flew out of the dust cloud and hit her, ruining her landing and increasing her speed just enough for her to hit her back against a tree. Ellen coughed from the impact, and instinctively ducked, which was the only thing that saved her: almost touching her hair, the man planted a flying kick into the tree, with enough power that his leg submerged almost up to its knee and got stuck where. Using this moment, Ellen put some distance between herself and Mr. Karate, as much as she could actually. Somebody else in her place would probably call her foolish for doing that instead of attacking him while he was defenseless, but they weren't familiar with Kyokugen like she was. Any other man, after missing and getting stuck like that, would probably be defenseless, that's true, but not Mr. Karate, not a Kyokugen practitioner of his level. If she had tried to attack him, she would most likely end up taking several powerful blows. He's strong... too strong! I-I can't beat a guy like that. He might be stronger than Takuma-shishou. His speed and power, but most of all, flawlessly executing different attacks one after another so that they become practically consecutive blows... he instantly adapted to the fact I dodged his initial attack and launched an entirely different one, already planning ahead to corner me against that tree and deliver a finishing blow. He said about beating me, but that attack would be lethal even if it hit my chest, while he aimed at my head... The mentally slapped herself as she realized that she, in fact, was terrified of this man. But, that attack... I wouldn't even have time to feel pain if-Shut up! Again with the emo suicidal idiocy! Are you insane? A cornered mouse will attack the cat, and you're not a mouse, you're a human! Fight! Even if you can't defeat him, what right does he have to attempt to take your life on a whim?! Fight, and beat him! Of course, she was right. Ellen curled her hands into fists and took a fighting stance. Even if she couldn't win, she wouldn't let him take her life so easily.
Freeing himself from the tree, Mr. Karate cracked his knuckles as he looked at the girl. It seems you have regained some fighting spirit. That's good, maybe now this will be interesting.Yeah, very interesting, - she replied silently, carefully observing her surroundings while not losing sight of the man. She couldn't win normally: with strength, speed and skill, because he surpassed her in all three categories - so she would have to make the best use of her surroundings to achieve victory. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to work with, just huge trees, the tops of which grew so thick that they created a constant darkness in the forest. She could probably use them to limit his movement somehow or drop him from a high place, but the former he already did quite well himself, so she might not be able to, and the latter involved a lot of risk: since he was all-around stronger, she might end up being the one to fall to her death. I'll have to think of something else. He can beat me on fair ground, and he seems to be able to make good use of the surroundings himself, so I'd be at an even bigger disadvantage if I try it. But what should I do? However, against an opponent of superior strength, speed, skill and intelligence, there wasn't that she could do except bet on luck. She would have to try and hold out against him until an idea that could work would come to her mind. Of course, that was easier said than done. He was stronger, so leaving herself open to land a blow wouldn't work well. He was faster, so she wouldn't be able to get him with a feint. He was more skilled, so he could read her moves much better than she could read his. What do I have that he doesn't?Boobs? That I could make use of, idiot! However, no sooner than Ellen realized what it was that she had that Mr. Karate didn't, the man jumped towards her with another attack, this time a punch. Unfortunately, she still had no idea what she could do with it to help her, and now that she was being assaulted again, she had little time to think about it as well. No, it wasn't just little time: she focused all her attention on avoiding the man's attacks, and she was still only barely able to do it. And that's also because I'm a disciple of the same style, - she realized, dodging a high kick by ducking low and then rolling away from a low sweep, - I have a general idea of what to expect from him. If I had the same abilities, but never studied Kyokugen, I wouldn't be able to dodge most of these blows. But just as she expected, she was unable to keep it up forever. As she attempted a back flip to avoid an uppercut, Mr. Karate suddenly changed his movement and planted a straight kick into her stomach, throwing her back and into a tree once again.
You really have gotten a lot stronger since last time. But not strong enough to challenge me yet! - he said, cracking his knuckles as he slowly walked towards the girl. What the hell are you talking about?! I didn't you challenge you! You just attacked me out of nowhere! - she yelled in response, backing up from him after moving to the side of the tree. He doesn't seem to care about words, and he's going to crush my defense easier with each try, because I will be losing strength. Maybe it's time to go with an old saying, - Ellen thought, tensing up as she ran towards Mr. Karate. Switching on the offensive? Not a bad idea, and certainly more productive than playing defense all the time. However! - he shouted, stopping her spinning kick with his forearm, - This isn't good enough! But just as the man was about to execute a counter-attack, he felt a strong blow to his side, one that sent him tumbling through the air for several meters, before he managed to regain control and kick off the tree he would otherwise crash into. What the hell? What dirty trick is that?It isn't a dirty trick. I am just using my body completely, like master taught me to! She did not attack him right away, hoping that he would retreat after taking a heavy hit, because there was no telling how much this idea would help her. Unfortunately, he figured it out after the very first blow, although he couldn't see it, not after a few as she hoped he would. Ha ha ha! I see! So that tail and ears aren't just for show... what kind of freak are you?Speak for yourself, big nose! - she shouted in response as she charged at him. There was no point in losing confidence now just because he figured out that she used her tail with basic Kyokugenryuu techniques to attack him. After all, just because he knew what she did and was going to do, didn't mean he would be able to defend against it properly. She had the advantage now, however small it was, and she needed to make the best of it. Unfortunately, her advantage very quickly seemed to vanish into nothingness. If it was a completely prehensile limb with a considerable muscular and bone structure, then she could finish the fight rather quickly, but a tail was just a tail. It was about the same length as her arms, but nowhere nearly as versatile as her legs, not solid enough to deliver a serious blow on its own and she had only basic control of its movement. In other words, although it was a fifth limb to use for attacks, compared to the other four, it was clumsy, weak and incapable of defense, plus she could only use it when she had her back to the opponent. Her second attack with the tail has successfully landed as she mixed it in with a low kick to backhand combination, but already she could feel that Mr. Karate had stiffened his muscles at the point of impact to reduce damage with perfect precision. The third attack he blocked, as she tried to get him with the tail after he ducked below a spinning kick. On her fourth attempt to attack with her excess body part, it was turned against her, as she tried to stop his arms from blocking her wheel kick: the man grabbed her tail and threw her against a nearby tree. She yelped shortly when he pulled on her tail: it was much more painful than expected, even though she already knew it was more sensitive to pain than arms or legs. But before she had a chance to recover from hitting the tree, a ball of energy hit her in the gut, knocking the air out of her. Really, you are one sad example of a Kyokugen user, - he started speaking, crossing his arms, - What's your excuse for losing? That I'm stronger, faster and more experienced? Ridiculous. You weild Kyokugen, the Fist of the Invincible! And you're giving it a bad name. Strength, speed, skill, intelligence, experience - none of that matters for one who follows the path of Extreme Limit. For them, there is no defeat. But even having the advantage of being able to land an extra attack with each move, you lost. Don't blame it on nonsense like difference in power. The fact that you are defeated means only that you fail to understand the true meaning of the style. Everything you've done in your life up until this moment was a wasted effort. The senile idiot should have spent those years training me, the true successor, not some petty failure!
What the hell are you talking about, old man? - Ellen said suddenly in an unexpectedly steady voice. However, there was a lot of cold anger in it, and it almost seemed to pierce one through alike daggers. She didn't know what pissed her off the most: getting called a failure, hearing her master's name tarnished or being talked to as if she was already beaten - but she sure was quite mad. So far, she was clearly getting beaten: she took more attacks than she landed, and they were heavier than her own, or at least that's what she thought. Yet if things continued at the pace they were going, she could keep doing this for a long time. I'm not weak anymore. Just a few blows won't incapacitate me. There was truth in her words, however, a more observant person in her place would doubt that was all there was to it. And indeed, it wasn't: a taijutsu master like Mr. Karate wouldn't underestimate their opponent or overestimate themselves. If he was wrong in assuming those attacks would have been enough to ascertain Ellen's defeat, then there must have been something to it that he couldn't anticipate, and in this case, something the girl wasn't aware of herself. It was her transformation, to be precise, which gave her a lot of power she didn't notice due to lack of experience, observation ability and thought on the matter. If it wasn't for that, she wouldn't even be able to stand anymore, yet there she was, ready to fight. But just because I'm more resilient than he thought doesn't mean things will change. Considering that I only landed one clear blow on him, and it was a trick, while he managed a bunch in a direct assault, it won't do me any good. There's no point if I can't land attacks. Just as she was done thinking that, her opponent announced it out loud, probably,a nd successfully, trying to demoralize her. It doesn't matter if you'll last a little longer. You are clearly losing badly, so it is only a matter of time until you are beaten. I should have probably gone after that pink-haired boy after all. He would probably put up more of a fight. Or maybe you'd be more motivated after I killed him? That sounds like a plan. Saying that Ellen didn't like being underestimated would be an understatement, and she liked being threatened even less, but threatening Caleb's life was going over the edge. And here I thought you decided to break all ties with him? - Nel teased her, although she was the one to talk some sense into the girl in the first place. I don't understand why you'd want to do this at all, - she said quietly, clenching her fists - If the title of the heir is that important for you, I'd give it up gladly. Even if you attack me because of it, I don't want to fight you, regardless of whether you're stronger than me or not. But if you're going to threaten my family, - she said those words involuntary and blushed a little, but it wasn't the time to be embarrased over a slip of the tongue, so she continued, abruptly raising her head to look at the masked assailant, - You better be prepared to die! Ellen shouted the last part as she went on the offensive again. But even after having said that, she still couldn't land a single direct blow: the attacks were either blocked or dodged. Yet somehow, as she continued to rain attacks upon the man, she seemed to become faster and stronger, although in reality it was him who was losing strength and coordination. In about two minutes of ceaseless assault, she was able to get through his guard several times, and finally, with a blow that landed on his mask, the man was thrown down to the ground. Moments later, the cracked mask fell off, revealing Mr. Karate's face. No... it can't be...! - Ellen said, stumbling backwards. The man lying before her on the ground, breathing heavily, Mr. Karate, the attacker with no shame, the guy who threatened Caleb... could it really be? Well done, Ellen. You have surpassed me after all, - he spoke, coughing up a little blood, which instantly stained his short snow-white beard. In an instant, the girl was by his side. Master! Hold on, I will...Don't bother, - he stopped her hands that were reaching for her medical bag, - There is nothing you, or anyone else, could do for me now. I have grown old, after all. My body shouldn't have been able to handle the movement I used against you just now. I'm content to have seen you one last time.No... why? Why?! - tears were streaming down the girl's face: she was sitting there and watching the only person who ever cared for her in the past die helplessly, and what was worse, she was the one who killed him. The reason is simple. You have greater potential than myself. This day, you were able to instinctively master the one technique of Kyokugen which I had failed to learn knowingly for many years. I have been watching you for a while now, since before you came to the Leaf. I understand something happened to you, but I'm afraid I can't be of any help on this matter. However, you found someone, another person entered your life. Ellen, - his expression had gotten very serious, - Treasure the people close to you above all else. I never had a family. Until I met you, all there was to my life was my fighting technique. I was truly miserable... you were like a child I never had to me. My time would come soon anyway, but at least now, having entrusted the work of my life to you, I can rest easy. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. It looked like the man was going to say something more, but he remained completely still for a few seconds. With trembling hands, Ellen reached out to touch his wrist, but it wasn't necessary: she could already tell, in ways she wouldn't be able to before, that he had fallen asleep. It's a dream, just a bad dream... it has to be... master, please... open your eyes, - she said in a shaking voice. Not only the shock of losing the only close person she had, but also seeing this man she always idolized as the pinnacle of power, lying dead, put her into a state of hysteria. She wasn't crying, moving or doing anything else, even her mind was blank, only her body was shaking all over. After several minutes, she let out a deafening shriek, one that quickly turned into a desperate roar that shook the whole forest as her mind seemed to fade.
