Due to a need by Airknight (and assumed request) I am making a text tutorial for making sigs.

Once you have finished the image part of a good sig, it will look something like so:

First step is to find a good font. There are a couple of sites I go to for my fonts when I want a new one. Some of these are given here:

Intstalling fonts can differ greatly depending on operating system and program. Easiest way to do it on windows is to download the file from the internet. If it is zipped, unzip it and put the .fon or .ttf file on the desktop. Then go to your C:/Windows/Fonts Folder, and click on File -> Install Font.

If you use Linux, then you can put it directly in the Gimp Fonts folder that is in the directory where you installed the program. If you use mac, you're out of luck, I hate macs.

Make sure to restart your image program once you have installed these fonts, or they won't appear. Once you have, we can continue.

Once you have found a font that fits the sig style, the next thing is to pick the right color. Most times I pick a color that is already present in the sig. Below are two examples of colors that would fit with this sig. Another option is to use a color that complements (not as in "praise") the other colors, like if it was a red and yellow sig, use an orange.

Another important part is the location of the text. Most times text should be put near where none of its color is present, to make it the most readable. If I had put the black text farther up, it would have blended with the background and become unreadable, such as below.

If there is no good location to put the text, there is another technique that may be used to help distinguish it from the background. This is one that I use frequently, since most of mine have each color everywhere.

Start out with the text where you want it. In your program, copy this layer multiple times, depending on how much contrast you need. In gimp, this would be in your layers tab, next to the trash can button. Make sure all of these layers are below your main text layer.

Next find a color that contrasts your main text color, and make all of your duplicate layers this color. Again, try to make it match the sig. Try and use colors that are already present.

Then blur the rest of the copies using "Filters -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur" under the main window in GIMP. Blur with it using the pixel radius set on 20-30. Do this for all of your layers. If you are using black and it doesnt contrast enough, set the top layered duplicates on subtract and it will become darker. Same thing goes for white, but put it on add. When finished you will get something with text like this. Notice the black cloud around the text.

That's it for the tutorial. Now you know how to make good text for sigs. Play around with your own techniques, and have fun with it. As GIMP says, Ctrl-Z is your friend.

this tutorial is for Gimp I take it. I never seen these options in Photoshop. Photoshop, the only way to edit font would be to simply upload them to your computr. That way, ALL of your Art programs could use them. Even MS Paint.
