Posted: Mon May 11, 2009 9:04 pm Post subject: Character Creation Guide (Optional to read) |
|
|
Ok then. I have noticed the little detail that people have putting together for their character profiles and since I have a serious OCD problem on detail, it irks me everytime this happens. I have been thinking of a way to help this problem, and this was the result. Tell me what you think of it. If you don't like it that is fine. I just thought it would help.
Character Creation Guide
Well, since you are reading this guide it can be assumed that you are new to the Naruto RP Center and wish to start working on your very own Role Play Character, or RPC. I’m Shikon and, as one of the Members who most regularly are active around site, I’ve chosen to put together this guide to help you put your RPC together, and help you avoid the many mistakes that most members make when creating their first RPCs. Follow this guide throughly and you should end up spending as little time going back and fourth through the approval process as possible. So hopefully you will get the application process done with quickly and move onto the role playing, which is why I am sure you came to this site.
Though before we begin, I’d like to add one tip on how to write your profile. You don’t have to follow this, but it will help. That tip is:
Write Your Profile in Microsoft Word:
Although it’s not a rule, writing in a program that has a spell check system will save you a lot of trouble later on. It’ll catch most spelling mistakes you make and one of the things that can cause your profile to be denied is seeing a bunch of spelling, and grammar errors as they read it – it makes the profile seem untidy, and thrown together without any thought, even if you put a lot of work into the application.
That’s not the only reason for this. Unless you anticipate on completing the profile in a single sitting, most of the time you’ll end up leaving your profile unfinshed. If you write it in word you can come back to it when you feel more comfortable and are more willing to think through things. If you write it on the board and post it as a WIP all it does is cause unorganization. Furthermore by doing this you will not have a chance to accidentaly clicking the wrong thing and deleting your work. I have done this on a few occasions and have found it to be most infuriating.
Cliches:
Many times throughtout my duties you find that I may be pointing out cliche's or things that are overly used by the majority of ALL RPers. While usually not encouraged by me or the rest of the site, cliché profiles aren’t completely forbidden. Although if you want to get a clichéd RPC approved, be warned, such profiles will be more criticized, so it had better be a very well done profile. Provided it is reasonable, logical and is well written, just about anything can be accepted.
Now, the application form. Which will be broken down into catigories as follows:
Basics:
- RPC Name
- Age
- Gender
- Height & Weight
- Appearance
- Rank
- Village
- Element
- Inventory
Personality:
- Basic Personality
- Hobbies, Goals & Enemies
Background:
- RPC's Childhood
- Time As An Academy Student
- Time As A Genin
Basics:
RPC's Name:
Obviously this bit is simple enough, and yet can be the hardest bit to come up with. Names are relatively easy – these can be looked up on various lists, such as the ones located in the useful links section of the boards.
Surnames, however, can be harder to come up with. Everyone has their own different way of doing so – some ( like myself) use actual Japanese words. Others just randomly hit keys on the keyboard until it makes a cool looking name. Although the staff and I won’t force you to do so, ideally this should sound at least Japanese to some extent.
Age:
The age of your character will most likely change the more you roleplay and, when starting off will often be related to your rank. Most ninja enter the shinobi academy between the ages of 7 and 9 and usually graduate at around 12 years old. This means that if you’re creating an academy student they’ll usually be somewhere between 9 and 12 years of age that is unless they’ve had a habit of messing up or they entered the academy later than usual.
If you’re making a Genin, wich people most often do, your age will range from 11 to about 17 at the most. Bear in mind the older the Genin you make the more likely that they’ve either been out of the academy for a while (and as a result the longer you’ll have to make their Genin arc), or that they screwed up in the academy somewhere. Age will also affect your height and weight somewhat.
Gender:
Gender will mainly affect height and weight and name, but other than that this is a personal preference. There’s no rule that states that you have to be a woman in real life to play a female ninja and vice versa.
Height and Weight:
This is one of the sections I usually have to haul people in on and is also one of the more changeable sections of a profile. Most people have a habit of making their characters too tall for their age, failing to realize that their character has a lot of growing still to do. Most people starting off at around 11-13 will typically be somewhere in between the upper quarter of the 4’ bracket to the lower half of the 5’ mark, depending on whether or not they’re tall for their age, and what gender they are. From about 13 onwards they will start to go through their growth spurt, and so height depends on how big they’re going to be when they finish growing, somewhere between 18 and 20.
Weight is another thing people tend to get a little wrong, and depends on a combination of height and body type. Taller people are heavier than shorter people with the same body type, and muscle is heavier than fat. Should your character wear training weights or have a particularly weighty weapon or item of equipment they carry around with them, they should have this calculated into their weight as well – and this should ideally be separated into a weight without the items in question and a weight with.
Appearance:
What makes a good appearance? Detail. Lots and lots of detail. You will see that I have an OCD on detail. This can be easily understood by reading any of my Applications for jutsu, bloodlines, and characters. The more descriptive you are on your appearance, the better people will be able to picture your character in their mind. Having a picture to go with the description helps but, often people tend to skimp on this section and put the bare minimum amount down. This should be around a good 7-10 or so decent sentences (less with a picture). Sounds like a nightmare to write? Not when you consider all the information that you have to put in here:
- Height:
- Body Type: Is the character skinny, overweight, muscular? Are they pale or dark skinned/tanned?
- Hair Color, style and length
- Eye Color
- Any Tattoos, Scars, birthmarks, Piercings or other marks they may have.
- The type and color(s) of clothing they regularly wear
- Any non-mission clothing they wear, some people have different outfits for when they’re not on a mission while others are always in their mission clothes.
- Any obvious weapons/weapon pouches, or other ninja accessories they have on them.
- Any other accessories they might have ( Asuma’s cigarettes, Kabuto’s glasses, etc.)
- Where they wear their headband.
| Quote: | | Appearance Cliché – The EVIL Eyes Cliché: if possible, can you avoid the ‘my character has red eyes for no other reason than because they make him look totally badass and evil’? I know this is based on anime where weird hair and eye color is common, but the amount of people who just have red eyes is ridiculous. This doesn’t apply if your character has a logical reason to have red eyes – such as being an albino for example. |
Rank:
When you start out as an E-Rank shinobi. Though there are few exceptions. When replacing a dead character, your new one may start at two ranks and one title below the deceased one; you may start lower but not higher. For ease of understanding, E and D rank can be roughly equaled to genin level, C and B to chuunin level, A and S to jounin level and SS to Kage level.
Village:
Village is mostly a matter of preference. You don't have to be apart of Knoha in order to have fire, or be apart of Suna to have Wind..etc.The villages and their countries are:
- Konohagakure (Village Hidden in the Leaves - Land of Fire)
- Sunagakure (Village Hidden in the Sand - Land of Wind)
- Kirigakure (Village Hidden in the Mist - Land of Water)
- Kumogakure (Village Hidden in the Clouds - Land of Lightning)
- Iwagakure (Village Hidden in the Rocks - Land of Earth)
Bloodline History:
If you have a character with a Kekkei Genkai or one that comes from a clan with a Hidden Technique you need to copy-paste a link to the clan page here. Note that the clan has to be approved before the profile will be accepted. For advice about Clan creation, please refer to the appropriate guide If you have no Bloodline then simnply place an "N/A"
Element:
Elements is the chakra affinity your character has. If you have a fire affinity for example then you can use fire element ninjutsu and so on and so forth. You cannot use an elemental technique that you don’t have an affinity for, so pick your element and techniques wisely. Make sure to read the element guide to understand what elements are usable. Only one of element at to start with..
Inventory:
Inventory is simple enough – a list of all the items, weapons and other useful things your character carries with them on a regular basis. The inventory should be presented in a list form and each item should come with a location on your character – so you’re not, for example, pulling Kunai out of thin air. An example of this would be something like
20x Kunai – In weapons holster strapped to left thigh
When putting together your inventory there are, however a few thing you need to remember or take into consideration:
- There’s obviously a limit as to how many weapons your character can carry, even allowing for a certain degree of pocket space, so don’t go over the top.
- A general limit for things like soldier pills or chakra pills or anything else that boosts or replenishes your chakra would be 3. Any more than that is a tad too god-mod.
- Puppeteers should list their puppet(s) here.
- Anyone wanting to summon things from weapon scrolls need the jutsu ‘Tobidogou (Projectile Weapons)’. The entire contents of any weapon scrolls must be listed next to it.
- Any weapon that has a jutsu like effect, that ability will take up a jutsu slot on your profile (example: The melody arm used by sound ninja Dosu Kinuta requires the ‘vibrating sound drill’ jutsu in order to work) . Weapons with extreme powers (such as Samehada for example)
The Swordmaster Cliche: Swords – everyone seems to love ‘em. However, there’s only so much that an 11-12 year old kid can carry before it becomes unrealistic. As a general rule we consider anything bigger than a Katana to be too big for a genin – indeed, genin carrying swords of any type is technically non-cannon (after all how many characters can you name who carry and regularly use Katanas or any type of sword at genin Rank)? Since they’re incredibly popular we’re prepared to allow them – however anyone who wants to run around with large sized katanas or bigger will have their profile treated harsher than usual and will be held to a higher standard – especially if their profile reads nothing like a sword specialist
Personality:
Personality:
This is another section that most people tend to skimp on yet, should be one of the longest sections on the profile. Personality covers a wide amount of topics and usually includes elements of the likes, dislikes, hobbies, goals, etc.... There’s a wide variety of things that can be put here, such as…
- How sociable the character is or isn’t? Do they get along well with people or do people dread seeing them? Do they like having lots of friends, a small select group or do they prefer their own company? Are they quiet or talkative? Are they shy or outgoing? Interesting or boring? Or anywhere in the middle?
- How do they react with members of the opposite gender? Is it any different from how they act around their own?
- How do they react to authority – be it higher ranked ninjas or otherwise? Are they obedient? Rebellious? Somewhere in between? Do they simply not care?
- Do they have any particular goals and aspirations? If so, what are they and why do they have them?
- How do they feel about fighting and/or killing? Are they blood-happy? Do they have pacifist tendencies? Are they somewhere in-between? Do they simply accept it as ‘part of the job’?
- How do they approach combat? Do they rush in heedless? Do they take a more tactical view of things? Do they prefer fighting up close or at range? Do they prefer to try and avoid fighting wherever possible and rely on others to do it for them?
- Are there any things in particular that they enjoy doing? Or vice versa, are there thing that they can’t stand doing?
- Do they have any phobias, limitations or other personality quirks that haven’t been touched
- on? Do they for example, have a stutter or speech impediment? Do they have any unconscious habits (such as, for example scratching their nose when they tell a lie)? etc.
| Quote: | Personality Cliché – The Uber-slut: Among those who create a female ninja there seems to be an alarming urge to create some kind of absurd sexpot, complete with scantily-clad, absurdly-buxom picture base, whose entire personality seems to be based around the fact that she’s totally hot and every man alive find her absurdly attractive and will do absolutely anything for her, even though she’s usually a total bitch. Because she’s so hot. And sexy.
Personality Cliché – The Emo Avenger: AKA the Sasuke clone. You know the drill, his parents or his sister or his cute fluffy bunny rabbit were killed, or murdered or possibly they just said something mean to him and now he’s emo. Really emo. He broods and and possibly wants to kill whoever may have killed his "whatever" as well. Oh and he’s really… really emo. Because all the cool kids are emo these days.
Personality Cliché – The ‘I-can’t-believe-it’s-not…’ or ‘_’ clone cliché: We all have a favourite character from Naruto and the temptation to recreate one of them is often very strong. Some people take things a little bit too far, however. A homage or tribute to a favourite character is fine, a direct copy however is not. |
Hobbies/Goals/Enemies:
These are optional – although most people tend to put them in anyway. Again these are all pretty self-explanatory. If you don’t feel like entering anything in the personality about these things, you really don't have to.
History:
Background
OK, this is another section that people tend to either skimp on or fill with enough cliché elements to make a mod vomit. Speaking of those cliché elements, I’ll list some of the worst offenders here;
| Quote: | The 'Inigo Montoya' Cliché: “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” The character’s life was going fine until a mysterious and generally evil stranger/an evil family member showed up and killed his parents with no provocation whatsoever. Now the character seeks revenge on this, most probably poorly thought out, cardboard cut-out villain.
The ‘Evil Spawn of my Loins’ Cliché: Alternatively rather than have some random stranger kill off the characters family, the character did it himself. Just because he’s badass and evil.
The Musical Countries Cliché: “I was born in Kirigakure, and my parents were ninjas, but then we moved to Konoha and everything was fine.” Country switching as part of your character background generally isn’t allowed – most people seem to forget that each country and it’s hidden village is effectively a military state with very tight border control. Most people generally aren’t free to come and go as they please, especially anyone who served as a ninja – in fact any ninja who leaves their village for another is a missing ninja who’d be hunted down and killed by their fellow countrymen. This is one of the clichés that will almost never get passed – unless somehow you come up with a logical reason for the country switch, and even then, not always.
The Prodigy Cliché: Ah the old trusty standby. This character is awesome. Pretty much at everything. Learned how to use non-Kekkei Genkai jutsu before they’d even started the academy. Completed the academy course in an absurd amount of time and/or with an absurd amount of ease, was the greatest student ever and graduated right at the top of their class. And oh yeah, most probably everybody either loves them or is envious of them and wants to be them.
Naruto’s New Best Friend cliché: In general, since NRC has very little to do with canon characters, we generally don’t approve of you referencing them in your back story (unless it makes sense or you’re sneaky enough about it that we don’t notice). Anyone who wants to Mary-Sue things however and have their character as Naruto’s best friend, or Sasuke’s love interest, or Itachi’s drinking buddy or whatever – basically screwing with accepted cannon – will have their profile languish in approval hell until those references are removed. In general it is considered that canon characters ‘don’t exist’ in the NRC-universe – so don’t include them.
Cliché – The Sole Survivor: The character is the only member of his clan left after the rest of them were wiped out by a mysterious ninja/plague/catastrophe. This is particularly cliché in the case of KKG and Hidden type clans. |
Childhood
Your characters childhood is very impoartant and should be one of the longer areas, as it contains everything that happened from your character’s birth until the time they entered the academy. Most people however seem to have trouble filling this out, unless they’re going for the usual cliché of ‘my parents were killed by…’ usually only managing to fill in a bare bones basic arc description. Considering that the childhood years are the ones where much of your personality and character traits are formed, there’s really no excuse for skimping on this section. Things that can be put here include:
- Who were the character’s parents? What did they do for a living? How did they treat their child (warm and loving? Strict but fair? Horribly (almost a cliché in and of itself)? Did they spoil them rotten or did they grow up in poverty?) Does your character share any of their characteristics or views?
- Did the character have any siblings? If so, what kind of relationship did they have with them?
Any other members of the family that played a big part in the character’s life? Like a grandfather or uncle for example?
- What did the character act like when they were growing up? Quiet? Loud? Boisterous? Sensitive? Were they always up to mischief or were they the picture of a well behaved child?
- How did they get on with other children their own age? Did they have a lot of playmates? Only a few? None? Did they have anyone in particular that they used to hang out with?
- Did anything notable happen during their childhood? (often if a person has a phobia, for example, it will be due to something that happened in their childhood – a hydrophobe for example might have nearly drowned)
- Did they have a favourite way to spend their time? Could they most often be found reading a book, for example?
- And finally, most importantly of all: What motivated them to become a ninja in the first place? Was it even their choice or were they forced intro it?
Academy Student
Much like the childhood era this tends to get skimped on a lot – it’s also the place where the prodigy cliché rears it’s ugly head the most frequently. So what should go in here? well, stuff like:
- How they found the academy life in general – was it what they expected? If not how? Was it more difficult? Or easier?
- How did they do in class? Did they have a favourite subject? Was there anything they were noticeably good or bad at?
- How was their social life like? Did they make any friends or were they the loner? Were they bullied… or did they bully others?
- Did they acquire a reputation for anything – such as being the class clown, or the resident teacher’s pet for example?
- Did anything important happen in their home life during this time? if so, what?
Whereabouts in the class did they graduate? Near the top? Near the bottom? Somewhere in the middle? (better than average students run the risk of falling afoul of the prodigy cliché.)
Genin
This area will probably be the shortest one as it deals with everything that happened from your genin graduation to the present day. Newly minted genin fresh from the academy won’t have much to put here – just a few lines about their hopes for the future. Anyone whose older than the typical academy graduation age of 11-12 however will likely either have entered late, screwed up in the academy or been genin for a while. In the latter case a longer than average description will be required, detailing what they’ve been up to in the years since they’ve graduated. In general since you’ll most probably be joining a team of fellow RPCs once you get approved, you might want to avoid making NPC squad mates or sensei’s part of your history – unless you intend to make and RP them as well. _________________ Sometimes life seemes to
